Research Interests

Dr. Feng’s research field is the structure with emerging materials and advanced construction technologies to civil engineering, including the following interests.

w        FRP strengthening existing structures, including FRP strengthening steel to resist buckling or to resist fatigue failure, steel pipeline strengthening, and anti-collapse strengthening for reinforced concrete structures.

w        All-FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) structures and FRP hybrid structures, including FRP bridges and FRP-concrete hybrid bridges, FRP woven web structures, FRP transmission towers, FRP-aluminum hybrid structures, and FRP tendons/cables.

w        Advanced concrete structures, including durable concrete structures, cold-formed thin-walled steel reinforced concrete structures, industrialized precast concrete structures, and bionic engineering design.

w        Corrosion resistant structures for sustainable development, including structures of desulfurization system in power stations, FRP gas flues and chimneys, and maintenance-free offshore structures.

Research Projects

w        Mechanical behavior and mechanical-photovoltaic properties of curved FRP sandwich panels with flexible solar cell skin, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Project No.51278276 (2013-2016)
This project is to present an innovative building system integrating functions and structure, which is assembled with FRP sandwich panels skinned with flexible solar cells to form the non-linear shapes. The key techniques and design theory are to be developed. The large size panel sample will be manufactured and tested.

w        Lightweight FRP structure system for buildings and bridges, National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program) No. 2012CB026200 (2012-2016)
This project is to present the lightweight structure systems made of FRP and to study the structural behavior. The weight, ductility, and strength reliability are considered synthesizedly from the component level to the structure level.

w        Research on materials and structures of FRP chimney and gas flue, R&D Project from Shenhua Group Co. Ltd. (2012-2014)
This project is to study the mechanical behaviors and design method of FRP filament wound pipe structures with large diameters. The material degradation, bulking failure, and connection are investigated.

w        Research and development for CFRP cable and anchorage with low price carbon fiber, National High-Tech R&D Program of China (863 Program) No. 2012AA03A204 (2012-2015)
This project is to develop the parallel CFRP rods cable and its anchorage. The failure mechanism and design method are studied. And impact, long-term load, thermal effect, and their coupling to the cable system are investigated.

w        High-performance FRP bridges for rapid installation, MOST International Cooperation Project No. 2010DFR50400 (2010-2012)
This project is to provide design methods and key techniques for the lightweight modular FRP bridge system, and a demonstration bridge was built at Chongqing. It took only 12 hours. The FRP profiles and connections were studied.

w        Study on mechanism and behavior of FRP anti-buckling strengthening steel members and FRP buckling-restrained braces, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Project No.50978149 (2009-2012)
This project is to present and develop the innovated structural technique of strengthening compressive steel members and building light-weight buckling resistant braces by applying an exterior restraint system composed of FRP and light-weight filling material.

w        Fundamental research on failure of anticorrosive layer in glue gas desulfurization systems, R&D Project from Shenhua Group Co. Ltd. (2010-2012)
This project is to study the mechanical behaviors of two types of anticorrosive layer, resin flake and adhesive rubber, in corrosive and high temperature environment. Different failure modes including cracking, debonding, peeling and penetration are investigated to discover the failure mechanism.

w        Semi-prefabricated steel reinforced concrete structures for industrialized housing, R&D Project from Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University Co. Ltd. (2006-2011)
This project is to study and develop an innovated cold-formed thin-wall reinforced concrete structure with shearwalls and slabs. The skeleton composed of reinforcements and permanent formwork are prefabricated in factory, being integrated and cast-in concrete in field.

w        Study on connection between FRP components in bridges, National Key Technology R&D Program No. 2006BAJ03B07-04 (2006-2010)
This project is to study the mechanical behavior of joints of FRP to FRP and FRP to concrete in different configurations. The innovated connections are developed for FRP which is brittle and orthotropic.

w        Large-span woven web FRP structures, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Project No. 50608047 (2006-2009)
This project is to present and develop the innovated large-span roof structure using CFRP strips. It is an integrated tension structure with high-strength material.
